I think this blog may be retired. I am doing too many things — working my day job where I’ve been promoted and have more responsibility, starting not one but two businesses — to keep it up anymore. Facebook allows me to post stuff and interact in a way this blog hasn’t been in quite awhile. If you know me, look me up there. All good things must come to an end, and my time is better spent on living out my dream. I think it’s coming, it’s just going to take some work.

Happy Mothers Day! 5/11/2008

Filed under: Me, Myself, and I — the webmistress @ 9:50 am

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms and moms-to-be. None of us would be here without our moms, and they never seem to get the credit they deserve.

On a personal note, a few years ago I sat down and told my mom that she’d been right about a lot of things. Things I didn’t want to hear as a young person, but in retrospect realize that she was right. I told her that while I didn’t listen, the best thing she could’ve done was be there and give that advice. She said that was the best Mothers Day gift she ever received. The great thing about my mom is that she never preached. She just gave advice. Turns out my grandmother did the same to her, and she wanted to carry on that tradition…

Sometimes we have to fail to learn, and sometimes we won’t listen to our moms cause they’re just that. MOM. She can’t possibly know anything, right? Well, turns out my mom knew a hell of a lot, but she was cool enough to let me make my own mistakes and give me advice when I asked for it. She admitted it was the hardest thing she ever had to do was watch me fail a few times, but I am a much stronger person for it.

My mom encouraged my love of music. She took me to see gigs, including once camping out for tickets to see David Bowie while I went and took the SAT. She’s been there when I’ve needed her, and she’s stepped back when I needed to assert my independence. I don’t think I’d be the person I am today without her.

My mom’s battled cancer twice, but she’s a fighter. As different as we are (I’m much more like my father), we are much the same. I thank G-d everyday that my mom is still here, and still giving me that advice when I need it.

Thanks mom!

Frank’s book gets its first proper review… 5/5/2008

Filed under: Literature — the webmistress @ 1:45 pm

As most of you know my friend Frank’s first novel BAND FAGS! comes out in June. The first proper review has come out in Publisher’s Weekly. Check it out.

BAND FAGS!
Frank Anthony Polito. Kensington, $15 paper (448p) ISBN 9780758222657

It’s the ‘80s and Jack Paterno of Hazel Park , Michigan (a.k.a. Hazeltucky) plays trumpet and hangs with the oddball “band fags,” including his Best Friend, Brad Dayton, who’s always embraced his homosexuality. Jack wonders if he’s “like that,” and also if a Total Band Fag could ever be a Popular Guy. Polito shows great fondness for and recall of all things ’80s (Jordache jeans, mid-period Bee Gees, Jon-Erik Hexum, Nintendo etc.) as Jack’s journey through Webb Junior High and Hazel Park (“Hillbilly”) High becomes an angst-ridden rollercoaster ride. Polito also has the era’s teen talk down: Jack’s headlong narration is sweet and funny. And the book’s light and breezy “know thyself” ethos paves the way for possible YA crossover. (June)

NASA is helping people like us go to the moon… kinda. If you enter your name into a special database your name will be included on a microchip aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter set to launch this summer. Once you enter your name you can print/save a certificate showing you’re part of the mission. Get all the info here.
